Holy Ground Women’s Shelter
Project Category: Adult Readiness
On this beautiful partly cloudy day Phyllis Turner Jepson the executive Director for Holy Ground PBC, took a photo of an apartment complex. This apartment complex was and is used by all of the clients that are associated with the Holy Ground PBC organization. The actually name for the apartment complex is the Stockard Family Campus. This apartment complex was purchased by the Holy Ground PBC organization back in November of 2017. The Holy Ground PBC organization then renovated the apartment complex in 2018. Here at the Stockard Family campus they hold many events for the organization and the clients. As a matter of fact, on May 3, 2018, the Holy Ground PBC held their Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Going into more detail, the Stockard Family Campus is made up of many different sections. The campus is made up of apartments for the clients, housing for the Resident Advisor, a work space for staff members and a community suite. The community suite is used by clients of the organization for community meetings and celebrations. Furthermore, the community suite allows clients to study together, use the computer stations and even to watch television and movies together. Having their very own apartment complex allows the staff members and the clients to have a better sense of a community. It has been a true blessing as it also allows Holy Ground to change the lives of its clients for the better. In the photo taken by Phyllis you can see two buildings that are a part of the Stockard Family campus. Both of the buildings are painted in a light grey color with multiple windows on each of its sides. Not to mention both of the buildings are two stories. Each has a set of staircases with white railing that safeguards all who walk. Furthermore, in the bottom left hand of the photo is a small playground that allows the children to have fun and play.

We who live in the United States face a lot of problems in this day and age. From people being homeless to having no money and food to eat. Although these may be very broad topics there is one that is a little bit more specific. Pregnancy in young girls is becoming more and more prevalent in this day and age. During the year of 2017, in Palm Beach Co, Florida there were around 617 live births. All of these births were from girls who were either 19 years old or younger. Since the mothers are very young in age, the children are very likely to experience development and behavioral issues. Not to mention, the young mothers will also experience many toxic stressors. Although this may be true, the Holy Ground Women’s Shelter will provide a solution that will definitely help these newly young mothers.

Holy Ground Women’s Shelter serves homeless female clients and their children. The Holy Ground operates in Palm Beach County located in Florida. Holy Ground Women’s Shelter serves mothers between the ages of 17-23 with a majority of the mothers being African American, Haitian and Hispanic.

Furthermore, the Holy Ground Women’s Shelter will look over the mental and physical health of the mothers. The young mothers at the shelter have individual counseling sessions which in turn helps them with their issues. In like manner, there are also the monthly Life Skills Series that is run by a licensed psychotherapist. Here, the staff meet with the mothers on a regular basis to set goals and check on progress.

In addition to looking over the mothers, the Holy Ground Women’s Shelter will look after their kids. Supporting both the kids and the mothers at the same time is a basic need for them that is supported by research studies. With the counseling of the mothers and the childcare given, the new mothers will be able to build stability. By the same token, their education will be able to continue while they work part-time and gain skills for everyday life.

The Holy Ground Women’s shelter looks at different things to ensure they are helping. First they check on the clients that attend their sessions and the Life Skill Series. Secondly, they make sure the mothers are following the rules. Thirdly, they check if the new mothers are being accountable as responsible parents and employees.
