CRS Anibong Resettlement
Project Category: Disaster Relief
In the photo you can clearly see some of the buildings in the background that are still standing up. The first one you can see is the tall white building in the top left hand corner of the photo. Most of the building is still standing but there are sections of the building that have been torn off. Towards the right of the building are more structures that have been damaged. Wires have been placed all around them who originally came from phone polls. Furthermore, all around the photo is debris that has come from all over the city. Under the feet of all the people in the photo are multiple pieces of wood that has been scattered. From giant pieces of wood planks to tree branches, there is so much on the ground that you can no longer see the street that use to be there. In addition, the people in the photo are trying to get to shelter to get out of the damaged city.

Here in the United States we have natural disasters that occur almost every single day. These natural disasters include hurricanes, snowstorms, floods, earthquakes and last but not least tornados. However in other parts of the world there are natural disasters that we in the United States don’t have. One of these natural disasters is a typhoon. A typhoon is a tropical storm that is formed in the Indian or western Pacific oceans. One of the things that make typhoons deadly is what it does to the areas in affects. In November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines and killed over 6,000 and left 29,000 people injured. One community in the Philippines known as Anibong was badly devastated. Many of the people lived in poverty and the building structures couldn’t stand the storm. However, the CRS is helping Anibong Families relocate to better housing to live in a new sustainable community.

Firstly, families in the Anibong resettlement project will obtain housing that will be their permanent residents. As well as being permanent, the new housing will be very resilient that can and will stand against typhoons. In addition, the new Anibong community will have access to clean water, electricity, markets and will be ruled by a homeowners association. Furthermore, the Anibong families will be connected to low-interest loan programs and will be trained by the Catholic Relief Services. With the help of new technology the people in the new Anibong settlement and the CRS can plot and assign land for the new houses. The land will be purchased in the Bagacay neighborhood which is just outside Anibong.

With all of the help coming to the Anibong Resettlement project, the people will have nothing to fear if another Typhoon Haiyan comes across the Philippines. 900 families will be safer than they have ever been thanks to this.

However, the CRS with its Anibong Resettlement Project is helping Anibong Families relocate to better housing to live in a new sustainable community.
