Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Florida
Project Category: Child Welfare
Moving to a new place that is unfamiliar to you can be a very scary thing. This is especially true for kids who don’t know anything about the new area and don’t know anybody. However, there are times when people are willing to help those who are in need. This picture which was taken by Big Brother Big Sister of Central Florida was given to us showcases someone helping out. On the left hand side of the photo is a young boy who is new to Florida. His name is Khalel, and he is one of the many kids that has joined the Big Brother Big Sister of Central Florida organization. Khalil is wearing a black t-shirt with a male figure standing in the middle in front of a bright light. In addition, he is also wearing a green dinosaur head that has been cut in half. Furthermore, both of his hands are in the position of a dinosaur ready to attack. Standing directly in front of him is his Big Brother. HIS Big brother is Eric, and both he and Eric are bonding. Eric is also wearing a dinosaur hat, which has also been cut in half. Instead of being green, his hat is yellow and brown in color. In addition, on his left wrist Eric is wearing a white apple watch. Both he and Khalel are standing in front of a dark blue cover that takes up most of the pictures background. Since Khalil is new to the central Florida area, he has a lot of unfamiliar territory that he needs to explore. That is why the staff members over at Big Brother Big Sister of Central Florida decided to pair him up with Eric. These two have been creating great memories together and will continue to do so in the near future.

As a youth growing up in today's world it is very different compared to what older generations had to go through. There are a lot more challenges that today's kids have to face. Some of the communities in this generation only last for a short amount of time. In addition, there has been an increase in the amount of violence that happens on a day to day basis. Not to mention, all of these things has increased the amount of peer pressure that kids face from their friends. In the Central Florida area this has become increasingly prevalent to many people. However, for every problem there is always a solution. The organization Big Brother Big Sister of Central Florida have provided a solution to the problem.

Big Brother Big Sister of Central Florida understand that one way to solve this problem is to pair up the young kids in Central Florida with an adult. However, they know that not just any adult will do the necessary work to help these kids. The adult will have to be upstanding and a caring person. After an adult has been paired with a young child, they will begin to meet 4-8 hours on a monthly basis. Both the child and the adult mentor will participate in activities that improve employability, skill development, educational success and many other things. Through the meetings and activities, the youth will refrain from dropping out of school, have improved grades, stay away from alcohol and drugs, inspire to be better and stay away from confrontations with law enforcement.

As for those who will be served during this project, Big Brother Big Sister of Central Florida will select 7 low-income youth. The kids will be between the ages of 6-16 who are among the 20% of the lowest performing kids in school. In addition, some of these kids have already been in trouble with law enforcement and the juvenile justice system. At the end of the day, Big Brother Big Sister of Central Florida seek to increase educational achievement, avoidance with bad behavior, and higher aspirations.
